Precision Wire EDM Services for Tall Parts

Why would an Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) shop come to United CGTR for wire EDM services? Though we built our reputation by providing superior centerless grinding and thread rolling services, our Connecticut shop also offers exceptional wire EDM solutions—including solutions for tall parts even a specialty shop can’t handle.

Most shops prefer smaller wire EDM machines for their effortless precision, but as we’ll demonstrate, you don’t have to sacrifice size to achieve precise wire EDM cutting.

Why Wire EDM Services?

Wire EDM is a top choice for cutting detailed patterns and deep cavities into metals, alloys, and superalloys, including steel, aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, carbon graphite, carbon steel, stainless steel, and titanium.

Suitable for both prototyping and full-scale production, wire EDM is capable of achieving precise, complex shapes, making it a popular process for creating molds, extrusion dies, and blanking punches, as well as metal parts and tools. United CGTR also frequently completes complex precision machined parts in our wire EDM department.

Our AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 certified shop leverages wire EDM to shape highly regulated medical and aerospace components with requirements such as intricate tolerances, mirror-like surface finishes, and small corner radii.

Precise, Wire EDM for Parts Measuring Up to 16.3”

United CGTR’s wire EDM services are backed by our Mitsubishi MV2400-ST Advance Type M800 Wire EDM, a powerhouse of a machine capable of precisely cutting parts up to 16.3” tall. With the MV2400-ST on our shop floor, you benefit from maximized productivity, incredible precision, and exceptional cut quality—all with impressively low operating costs.

The challenges of using wire EDM services for tall parts

Wire EDM is best known for achieving precision on small or short parts. On taller parts, a longer wire is required, and an effect known as “flushing” can become problematic.

Picture a circus tightrope, and you’ll have a clear vision of how a longer EDM wire can lose its precision. A very short tightrope can easily sustain its tautness, whereas a long tightrope will bow and bend with use. Likewise, tight tolerances are easier to hold with a short wire. A long EDM wire surrounded by water in the machine’s tank is prone to imperceptible movements that may throw a part out of tolerance.

True precision for tall parts

Under our operators’ skilled hands, the MV2400-ST accurately holds +/- 0.001” tolerances on parts up to 16.3” tall—the Mitsubishi’s maximum part height. On parts no taller than 8”, we can hold tolerances of +/- 0.002”.

By applying custom fixturing and advanced cutting maneuvers, our operators mitigate flushing concerns and craft truly precise, tall parts with intricate geometries. We can even provide DFM (Design for Manufacturing) guidance to ensure your part design is perfectly suited for wire EDM cutting.

3 Advantages of the MV2400-ST for Wire EDM Services

State-of-the-art manufacturing equipment benefits our customers by enabling short lead times, top quality, and cost efficiency. Here’s why you’ll be glad you chose United CGTR and our Mitsubishi wire EDM machine:

1. Best auto-threading system on the market

The MV2400-ST boasts the best auto-threading system currently available, with 20” of annealed wire reliably passing through the machine’s solid, round, diamond guides. And because EDM wires can (and do) break, the MV2400-ST is capable of threading a maximum-height workpiece at both the starting point and through the gap to recover a broken wire. This advanced auto-threading means less downtime for us and shorter production times for you!

2. Ideal for medium to large parts

Our MV2400-ST’s wire EDM capabilities extend to parts with maximum dimensions of 41.3” x 32.3” x 16.3” and a maximum submerged weight of 3,300 pounds. With this kind of versatility, we can use wire EDM to quickly and accurately craft complex components like fixtures for engine repairs or cartridge ejectors for high-power firearms. These impressive dimensions mean fewer limitations and more solutions for your complex parts!

3. Lowest cost of operation in the industry

The MV2400-ST grants us the ability to use a larger-diameter wire than smaller wire EDM machines accept. The thicker wire enables faster cutting speeds, which allows us to cut big parts just as quickly as another shop cuts small parts. This faster cutting time means less labor for us and better cost-efficiency for you!

United CGTR Has Open Capacity for Wire EDM Services

Along with high-caliber wire EDM services for medium to large parts, our shop offers equally impressive wire EDM processes for smaller, shorter parts. Whether you need intricate fixtures or essential components for high-speed machinery, United CGTR is the partner you need when precision can't be compromised.

With open capacity on all our wire EDM machines, we’re equipped to quickly initiate your project and craft the parts that drive your industry forward.
